It’s not any one date on the calendar. It’s a feeling that’s been building all August, and this year it lands with a rivalry game, a festival, and porches already decorated for Halloween.

There’s a particular feeling that starts creeping in sometime in August, long before any calendar declares it. It builds in layers. It’s a district here, morning traffic shifting shape there, until this week, when Denver Public Schools finally joined the party and made it official for the whole area at once. Though if we’re honest, the feeling had already arrived. It always does.
Fall is the best season, no cap, and it’s been that way for a lot of us since long before we owned homes or worried about closing dates. Something about that first-day-of-school feeling never quite leaves you. I am picturing the new notebook smell, the slight nervous-excited flutter, the sense that a chapter was turning. Decades later, most of us aren’t the ones catching a bus anymore, but that same flutter shows up right on schedule every August anyway. It’s in the cooler morning air. It’s in the parks going quiet a little earlier on a weeknight. And, if we’re being honest, it’s in the back-to-school aisle too. There’s no good reason for an adult with no kids to need a new planner, and yet…
And this year, fall is kicking off with a banger with the Broncos opening on the road at KC on Monday Night Football. Nobody’s driving to Arrowhead for that one, which means the whole city ends up in the same place anyway: someone’s living room, doors open, snacks out, everyone leaning in at the same moments. The home opener comes the following weekend, and that’s when Empower Field gets its turn. Though, by then, the pattern’s already set. From here through winter, a lot of our Sundays (and the occasional Monday night) belong to somebody’s couch.
The rest of the calendar is shifting right along with it, and it’s worth getting excited about. Denver Food + Wine Festival takes over the city this very week, one last big, loud celebration before things narrow into fall’s tighter lineup. Oktoberfest is already on the books for September, and summer’s sprawling outdoor concert season is winding down.
Then there’s the pull toward the mountains, which starts right about now. Leaf-peeping trips and orchard visits are close enough to start planning for real, and somewhere in the back of a lot of minds, ski season’s already loading in. The gear gets pulled out of storage, the first daydream about opening weekend. If an Epic Pass is part of that plan, it’s worth knowing prices tick up again on September 7, but that’s really beside the point. The real feeling is just anticipation building, the same quiet countdown that happens every year right around now.
Closer to home, there’s a version of this excitement that’s uniquely Denver: the homeowners who don’t wait for October to fall in love with Halloween. Every September, porches around the city start filling in early. You’ll find a pumpkin here, string lights there, sometimes a full-blown display going up weeks ahead of schedule. We’re not rushing the season as much as we’re refusing to wait for permission to enjoy it.
None of this is really about any one thing on its own. It’s the traffic and the Broncos and the festivals and the mountains and the porches all showing up in the same few weeks, stacking on top of each other until the whole city just feels different. That’s the part that’s hard to put a finger on but impossible to miss. And it all comes home to roost exactly where it should: on the couch during the game, in the garage sorting ski gear, on the porch stringing up lights a little earlier than strictly necessary. Fall doesn’t wait for an announcement. It just shows up, the same way it always has… that unmistakable flutter that feels like an old friend.
