A short list for the house, right alongside everyone else’s back-to-school list.

Every August, everyone’s making lists: notebooks, folders, the right kind of glue stick. Somewhere in the shuffle, it’s worth making a much smaller list for the house too. We’re not talking chores, just a few small things that can make daily life a little easier once they’re in place. Here’s some of our favs.
A fabric shaver. If you’ve got a sweater, throw blanket, or couch cushion that’s started pilling, this is one of those “why didn’t I have this years ago” fixes. A few minutes with one and fabric that looked ready for the donation pile looks new again.
A slider for your heaviest countertop appliance. Stand mixers and air fryers are heavy enough that most of us just leave them wherever they land and work around them. A simple slider underneath lets you glide it out of the way with one hand instead of wrestling it across the counter every time.
Under-cabinet lighting. Wireless, battery-powered, no tools required. It makes a genuine difference in a dim kitchen or pantry. Motion-activated versions are even better tucked into a closet, so the light’s just on when you need it and off when you don’t.
A motion-sensor night light or two. Cheap, easy to install, and one of those things you wish you had when you’re stubbing a toe at 2 am in a dark hallway.
Slow-cooker liners. If a slow cooker is part of your weeknight rotation, this is the difference between a meal and a meal plus twenty minutes of scrubbing. Line it, cook, lift it out, done.
A jar opener that actually works. Sounds minor until the day it isn’t. A good one takes almost no grip strength and ends the standoff with a stuck lid in about two seconds.
A folding step stool. Not just for kids! A single-step version that folds flat and tucks behind a door or in a closet earns its keep on that top shelf or hard-to-reach cabinet long after summer’s over.
None of these are life-changing on their own, but small conveniences add up, the same way a good habit does. Put a few of them in place, and a home starts to feel like it’s working for you, one small moment at a time.
